Every day, I am inspired by humor.  I have often marveled at the ability of the human animal to crack a joke even in the darkest of times.  I remember laughing at jokes about the Challenger explosion and 9/11… I felt bad, but I did laugh.  I think that it is quite strange that a species that has invented such horrible things as persecution and war also has the ability to laugh about the absurdity of it all.  Imagine what life would be like without joking about the bills or bad grades or the terror alert?  I make it a point to laugh about at least one thing every day.  Finding that humor even in the worst and most trying of times keeps me going.

The unprecedented phenomenon of social media has become not only my favorite invention, but one of the most important inventions in the last one hundred years.  While some may scoff at the idea of putting Facebook and Twitter above the atom bomb or the transistor, it is social media that has connected untold millions of computer users with one another.  While some users plant imaginary crops and trade messages with friends of long ago, others organize protests that bring quick and decisive social change on local, state, and national levels.  Some students get together to protest a school’s decision not to allow same-sex couples to prom while Egyptian youth rally for true and meaningful regime change.  If one is looking for an invention that has changed the world, one should look no further than the evolving and exciting beast that is social media.

If I were a time traveler, and I could only go back or forward in time, I would choose to go forward. I study history at the university level, so I know what happened in the past. I know that in many cases, with enough data and some hard work, we can figure out more or less what the past was like. What’s really interesting to me are all the things that I will never see, the things that we have no way to figure out. I would love to go forward and time and see all the new technology. Maybe people will even live on other planets some day. That would be wonderful to see.
